The typical Bollywood Tamasha…

Well, this has nothing to do with the movie Tamasha that stars Hottie Ranbir Kapoor and sexy Deepika Padukone. I am a big Bollywood fan, I love the Hollywood movies but they lack the masala that a typical Bollywood movie has. Sometimes they may be irritating but they definitely provide us with feel good family drama and great music. Like cricket, Bollywood is a big deal in India. People get mad over to get a glimpse of the Bollywood stars. Amitabh Bachchan, the star of the millennium, has thousands of visitors if he is in the town and he doesn’t forget to greet them. Similar is the fan following of the stars like Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan…
A typical Bollywood movie always has a few things in common like the villain, a love triangle, a village (that is usually Switzerland), a sad song, larger than life back drop, a crazy joint family, a damsel in distress and a 3 hour long plot.

The villain (or the vamp) :He or she would have all the negative characters that we can not even imagine. They generally have dark or prominent makeup so that they stand out. They will have some weird habit or some weird dialogue. The lead protagonist will always win a fight over them. There is always a reason for them to be a bad character. The protagonist is always the strongest person, one punch from him makes the villain fly away.At the end of the movie either they die, or are sentenced for life imprisonment.

The damsel in distress: The female protagonist is someone who Is always dependent on the male counterpart.  She should have a zero size otherwise she won’t get meatier role in any movie. Both the villain and male lead are in love with her. The male lead avenges the villain just to win over her. She has all the qualities required for a good wife like sharam, haya. She has the solution of every problem. She looks after every one in the family and still never complains. She always looks so perfect, even after getting up in the morning..There are very few movies such as queen, kahani, mardaani that feature females in the leading role. She could even be half the age of the male protagonist.

The rain song: Mr. India wouldn’t have been this successful without the Kaate nahin katate yeh din ye raat…Sridevi in her blue chiffon saree makes an everlasting sex appeal…She mesmerises not only Anil Kapoor but also several generations….I don’t remember the movie but I remember the song tip tip Basra pani…in which Raveena looks so ravishing…then came Zoobie Doobie from 3 Idiots…so if there is a rain song in the movie then that movie is supposed to be super duper hit..

The extended family or the joint family: Bollywood has always given importance to the joint family culture..there would be 3-4 brothers with 2-3 sisters. Then there would be aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces. Hold on this isn’t enough, there would be also an adopted or an illegitimate child. They all live in the same house irrespective of the income of the family.

Some 10-12 songs: We Indians love to celebrate be it someone’s birth or death. We have song for every situation and so does the Bollywood movie. A standard movie has around 4-5 songs, however the big banners such Yash raj films, Dharma productions or rajarshi productions make movies that have at least 10-12 songs..a happy song, a sad song, a rain song, a family song, avoid the kiss song (this song is to avoid the kissing scene between the leads), a wedding song, a break up song and what not.

The protagonist’s friend: This one is a supporting actor, their main role is to make sure that the leads look good. They are generally dumb witted and are often used to fill in the scenes when the protagonist is not busy flirting or fighting. They are always loyal to the lead and so their best to help them out. They are always there whenever the lead needs them (don’t they have their own house or family)

Miscellaneous: There is always rich and poor angle in the movie. Either the male protagonist is from rich family and the female from poor or vice versa. The plots are loosely based on a love triangle, on a Hollywood movie (which is plagiarism), on a tollywood, sandalwood or mollywood movie, or on a book. There is always a dance sequence where the protagonist dances in front of some 10-20 people. I am still guessing the reason behind it.

However, the Bollywood movies are changing , they have become modern and open. The movies are becoming more realistic and are focusing on new issues. The movies such as Titli, Piku, 3 Idiots, Khosla ka Ghosla are concentrating on real life issues and thus taking the industry to the next level.
